The flying sky in Dunhuang murals appeared at the same time when the caves were created. It lasted for more than one thousand years from sixteen States through ten dynasties until the end of the Yuan Dynasty, when the Dunhuang Grottoes were completed. In the long history of more than 1,000 years, due to the change of dynasties, the transfer of political power, economic development and prosperity, frequent exchanges between Chinese and Western cultures and other historical changes, the artistic image, attitude and artistic conception, style and taste of the flying sky are constantly changing. Different times and different artists have left us with different styles and characteristics of the flying sky. For more than a thousand years, the flying aptas of Dunhuang have formed a history of evolution and development with characteristics. Its evolution is generally consistent with the entire history of Dunhuang art development, which is divided into four stages.

From the artistic image of Dunhuang flying apsaras, it is not an artistic image of a culture, but a complex of many cultures. Although the hometown of Apsaras is in India, the apsaras in Dunhuang are the joint breeding of Indian culture, Western culture and Central Plains culture. It is the combination of Buddhism and Taoism, the West region and the Central Plains after long-term exchanges, with Chinese cultural characteristics of the flying sky. It has no wings, no feathers, no round light, with the aid of clouds rather than relying on them, soaring through the sky mainly by flowing dresses and fluttering streamers. The apsaras of Dunhuang can be said to be the most talented creation of Chinese artists and a miracle in the history of world art.
